ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jennifer Segarra-Fernandez had loved reading and writing stories since she was a little girl. She especially loved to hear the stories told by her mother of life on her family farm as a child in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Her favorite story was the one of el lechon Choncho, the lovable, kind, and extraordinary pet pig. Always proud of her Latin heritage, she dreamed of one day bringing this story to life in a children’s book. Her dream finally came true. She lives in the United States with her family. –This text refers to the paperback edition.
HERE IS OUR REVIEW
If your early reader has not yet met El Lechon Choncho, run, don’t walk, to your nearest bookstore or library. And once you’ve read it, you’ll have to read it again. The book is about Choncho, a giant pinkish-white pig with large ears that stand straight up. He is as big as a truck. Choncho lives with a kind and loving family on their farm. He is especially adored by Hilda, one of the three little girls in the family. Choncho acts more like a dog than a pig. His favorite thing to do is to be with the little girls when they go down the hill to fetch water. He loved sliding down the hill and splashing in the river juz below the hill.
Fun-loving family pet Piggie and three little girls with their amusing and incredible adventures set in the beautiful land of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico are sure to delight the little ones in your life. El Lechon Choncho is written by Jennifer S. Segarra in English with a sprinkling of Spanish Vocabulary throughout the book. Kids will learn words such as un toro grande which means a large bull, pollos which are chickens, patos which are ducks, and vacas which are cows, and many more.
FINAL VERDICT
What a fun story. Choncho is such an adorable character and the story is so zany. Filled with all the elements the young children love, animals, adventure, and humor, El Lechon Choncho is pure delight for the early readers. The writing is lively and laugh-out-loud funny, while still inserting life lessons about sharing, kindness, friendship, and caring for animals.
READING WITH YOUR KIDS PODCAST INTERVIEW
April 03, 2021 at 11:30 am by Jennifer S. Segarra
I am so excited to share with all of you earlier this week on Monday, May 3rd, I had the pleasure of meeting Jed Doherty. He reached out to me to join him on his wonderful podcast, Reading With Your Kids. It is an exceptional podcast all about encouraging parents to read with their children, cook with them, and do fun activities with them, as well as experience tv, movies and music together. In other words, their podcast is all about helping parents build stronger relationships with their kids.
Not only has it had its share of guest celebrity children’s book authors such as LeVar Burton (Reading Rainbow, Star Trek TNG, Roots), Candace Cameron Bure (Full House, Fuller House, a ton of Hallmark Channel Movies), and Karyn Parsons (Fresh Prince Of Bel Air). It was nominated for an iHeart Radio award for best Children’s book podcast in 2019. You can hear the podcast on either iHeart Radio, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts and/or all his social media accounts.
One thing you MUST do is check out his website Reading With Your Kids Podcast – Inspiring Families To Read Together – iHeartRadio Award Nominee. His website is full of terrific content for parents such a blog which gives their latest reviews on up and coming children’s books and their authors, a newsletter you can subscribe to, reading lists by category, announcement of live events (interactive right now due to Covid), and their special area called RWYK Certified Great Reads. You definitely want to check that one out because it was developed to acknowledge books and products kids and parents will love to experience together.
That is not all! If you are a children’s book author, there is a section for you as well. You can look into being a guest to present your book as well applying for their Certified Great Read seal of approval. Overall, this website is a win win for parents, authors and most of all children!
It was such an honor to be able to speak today with Jed about my journey to writing my children’s book, “El Lechón Choncho, Otherwise Known as Choncho the Pig.” Not only did we share a love for all things Puerto Rico, but it was lovely to able to share my mother’s story. Families need to do all they can to spend quality time and what better way then to read together.
I will be announcing when the podcast will be available. Be sure to listen. I will be posting it on this website as well as all my social media accounts.
While you are at it, please be sure to follow Read With Your Kids Podcast on all their Social Media accounts. Links are below.
